Flickr and blog trawling

What a time consuming occupation! I must have spent about 2 hours tonight just trying to follow the course (including double checking what I had already done - maybe a sign of old age), reading a few blogs, joining Flickr etc. How do others get the time to do all this? I get 'screenitis' after a while and cannot stay on the computer anymore.

I must lead a dull life as my latest excitement is that I bought a George Foreman Steamer yesterday, on sale at nearly half-price (I'm sure many of you have seen the brochure it was in). I did have a three tier steamer saucepan set that I used on the stove top (I always steam vegies if possible) but the handles burnt to the extent that the last time it was used you could smell the plastic fumes all through the house and in fear of poisoning ourselves we threw it out. I did not even know about electric steamers until Christmas day, when my daughter-in-law used her steamer to cook our Chrissie vegies. As I had been unable to find a suitable replacement set for my stove-top steamer, I decided to investigate the electronic type, only to find this one on special, costing me condirerably less than a saucepan unit. I haven't unpacked it yet (a joy saved for tomorrow when I have time) but I am excited about the possibilites, especially the idea of cooking all the food for a meal at once and me not having to watch over the stove (it has a timer), leaving me more time for trawling the net!

Which segways nicely into this week's exercise on Flickr and commenting on a photo from there. I am going to try to download the photo so here goes:

Cancel that, I  just trawled through different topics to find that most of the photos I had chosen are marked "All Rights Reserved' - I tried again, using Advanced Search, under only those photos with Creative Commons licence, only to find that the one I chose could not be shared. I am too tired to be bothered trying any more. If I want to find a photo for use, perhaps in a display , I need somehow be able to find the ones that I can legally use and are available for sharing, quickly. Trawling through pages and pages of other people's photos is not my idea of fun (unlike a colleague who loves this ). I think I'll stick to Google Images, I find it much more user-friendly. (I am willing to be corrected on this if someone wants to give me some searching hints). To summarise, on first use I am not at all impressed with Flickr.

OK, that's my rant for the night. Maybe I'll find the next topic more useful. Here's hoping.

  2. I agree too, it was very time consuming, but nice checking out the photos if time was available. Also had the same copyright problem and I wasn't prepared to pay for a pic! I am tempted to stick with Google images too, far more user friendly!

  3. welcome to the training - at least the other activities aren't as time consuming as flickr

  4. No doubt about the time used! There was an interesting Gosnells theme, though. Just thought I would also mention two good free photo sites as well - www.freedigitalphotos.net and www.sxc.hu You have to mention the site and the photographer if you use images from the site but there are significant numbers of photos on both of them. If you noticed, Sully, I used the first one for the Christmas card I sent the library staff...

  5. A lot of people tend to do it at home so they don't have any interruptions. But I agree it is very time consuming.

  6. I guess if you used it frequently it would become easier, but too many incorrectly labelled and personal photographs for my liking.

  9. Screenitis - an appropriate description. Check the two sites Gozziehoon mentioned. Both are good. Good luck.

  10. Liked your clever segway from electronic steamer to Flickr. I prefer to read more information about your interaction with the steamer than with Flickr.

  11. I also had lots of the same problems with Flickr searching for content I could use and then also being able to actually even link the image let alone post it directly to my blog. The instructions on Flickr need some fixing.
