What a time consuming occupation! I must have spent about 2 hours tonight just trying to follow the course (including double checking what I had already done - maybe a sign of old age), reading a few blogs, joining Flickr etc. How do others get the time to do all this? I get 'screenitis' after a while and cannot stay on the computer anymore.
I must lead a dull life as my latest excitement is that I bought a George Foreman Steamer yesterday, on sale at nearly half-price (I'm sure many of you have seen the brochure it was in). I did have a three tier steamer saucepan set that I used on the stove top (I always steam vegies if possible) but the handles burnt to the extent that the last time it was used you could smell the plastic fumes all through the house and in fear of poisoning ourselves we threw it out. I did not even know about electric steamers until Christmas day, when my daughter-in-law used her steamer to cook our Chrissie vegies. As I had been unable to find a suitable replacement set for my stove-top steamer, I decided to investigate the electronic type, only to find this one on special, costing me condirerably less than a saucepan unit. I haven't unpacked it yet (a joy saved for tomorrow when I have time) but I am excited about the possibilites, especially the idea of cooking all the food for a meal at once and me not having to watch over the stove (it has a timer), leaving me more time for trawling the net!
Which segways nicely into this week's exercise on Flickr and commenting on a photo from there. I am going to try to download the photo so here goes:
Cancel that, I just trawled through different topics to find that most of the photos I had chosen are marked "All Rights Reserved' - I tried again, using Advanced Search, under only those photos with Creative Commons licence, only to find that the one I chose could not be shared. I am too tired to be bothered trying any more. If I want to find a photo for use, perhaps in a display , I need somehow be able to find the ones that I can legally use and are available for sharing, quickly. Trawling through pages and pages of other people's photos is not my idea of fun (unlike a colleague who loves this ). I think I'll stick to Google Images, I find it much more user-friendly. (I am willing to be corrected on this if someone wants to give me some searching hints). To summarise, on first use I am not at all impressed with Flickr.
OK, that's my rant for the night. Maybe I'll find the next topic more useful. Here's hoping.

the christmas break
Christmas and New Year have been both family and international occasions for me. I have my nephew from England staying, my son came from Sydney, and a friend of his from Brazil. There were 10 for Christmas Day evening meal and it felt like I was back in my childhood when all the rellies used to come to Grandma's and we would have up to 25 at the table for Christmas celebrations. This would be the biggest Christmas my family has had for years.
Boxing Day saw many of us on Rottnest - boy, was it hot! Snorkling, swimming and eating - great activities.
Since then I've just read, slept, played jigsaws on the internet, been out with the visitors and generally relaxed, which brings me to doing this blog as I thought I should start trying to catch up with Web2.0.
I have found the process of creating the blog quite simple but am at a bit of a loss as to what to post. So here goes a few comments:
- I enjoyed looking at the blog pages of other libraries and can see their use in keeping in touch with clients
- I am hoping that Web 2.0 will teach me the fundamentals of the latest types of internet communication
- Personally, I think I'd rather read a good book anyday, but for those who don't read books (and I am constantly surprised at how many people this is) it is a valid form of literature. People are still reading and communicating and participating in the world - all good things in my book (ha ha).
That's enough for my first time. Think I'll read a few of the other blogs now and find out other people's ideas and experiences.
Bye for now
